Year 12 Biology Students Thrive at University of Sydney Kickstart Workshops

1

This week, our Year 12 Biology students took part in two dynamic Kickstart Workshops at the University of Sydney – and they were nothing short of outstanding! Their engagement, curiosity, and enthusiasm throughout the day truly represented our school with pride.

Workshop 1 delved into Module 5: Heredity, where students investigated the genetic cause of the inherited disease sickle cell anaemia. Through an in-depth case study, students explored how genetic mutations are passed on and how they manifest in individuals and populations.

Workshop 2 focused on Module 6: Genetic Change, giving students the opportunity to explore the powerful role of biotechnology in our world. From medicine to agriculture and industry, students examined real-world applications of cutting-edge genetic technologies and the science that makes it all possible.

One of the most exciting aspects of the day was the hands-on lab work, which gave students a taste of university-level practicals. Donning lab coats and working in real university laboratories, students were able to connect their classroom learning to authentic, real-world scenarios – an experience that was both inspiring and empowering.

Our students were exceptional throughout the day – asking thoughtful questions, collaborating enthusiastically, and making the most of this enriching opportunity. It was wonderful to see their passion for science come alive in such a stimulating environment.

A big thank you to the University of Sydney for hosting such an engaging and educational day.
