Year 7 Shine in Technology Mandatory – Materials Textiles Project

1

This term, some of our Year 7 students have been showcasing their skills in the Technology Mandatory – Materials Textiles course through a hands-on, sustainable project. Tasked with designing and constructing tote bags, students worked with recycled deadstock fabrics—materials leftover from the fashion industry that would otherwise go to waste. This deadstock fabric has been generously donated to us by members of the KHS public.

The project gave students the opportunity to explore sustainability in design while developing essential textile skills such as pattern-making, cutting, and sewing. Each tote bag reflected the creativity and individuality of its maker, with unique designs and thoughtful construction.

“I really enjoyed learning how to use a sewing machine and knowing that we were helping reduce waste,” said one student. “It made the project feel even more meaningful.”

Teachers commended the students' innovation, craftsmanship, and commitment to sustainability. Fantastic effort, everyone!
