Kirrawee High School students once again made a powerful contribution to the community through their involvement in the Sutherland Shire Relay for Life over the weekend. The event, which raises vital funds and awareness for cancer research, saw our students embody the schoolโs signature strengths of leadership, civic responsibility, and creative excellence.
Our student leadership team demonstrated incredible initiative and compassion, actively fundraising and participating in the overnight relay, honouring those affected by cancer and walking in solidarity with the broader community.
We are especially proud of Year 10 student Erika, who opened the Relay with a heartfelt Acknowledgement of Country on Saturday morningโan important and respectful start to the event that was warmly received by attendees.
Adding to the eventโs sense of celebration and reflection, the Kirrawee High Jazz Orchestra delivered a spirited performance on Sunday morning. Despite the early 7:15am arrival and chilly conditionsโso cold that some students looked as blue as their tiesโthe ensemble brought warmth and energy to the crowd.
Solo performances were delivered by a range of talented musicians, including Liam Wood (Guitar โ in his first official gig with the Jazz Orchestra), Will Pearce (Trumpet), Joshua Pearce (Tenor Sax), Ben Wichgers (Alto Sax), and Sienna Bussing (Piano). Vocalists rose to the occasion despite some impromptu lyric folder choreography courtesy of Mrs Lacey. The group performed crowd favourites such as Ease on Down the Road, Lady is a Tramp, Canโt Take My Eyes Off You, and Happy Together.
Notable moments included Koby Seligโs debut solo performance of Sway, followed by a duet with Olivia Mustapic. We also showcased new numbers, including Heard it Through the Grapevine sung by new member Tiana Bishara, and Moondance performed by Year 12 student Olivia Mustapic. Scarlett Pettigrew delivered a moving rendition of the Emma Pask classic Georgia, leaving a lasting impression on all who heard it.
The Jazz Orchestraโs performance was so well received that organisers have already extended an invitation for them to return for next yearโs 25th anniversary event. Their professionalism, passion and musical talent continue to impress, leaving every stage brighter than they found it.
These contributionsโwhether through leadership, performance or cultural respectโare a testament to the character of our students and the values we nurture at Kirrawee High. We thank all those involved for representing our school with pride, purpose and community spirit.
