Konnichiwa from the Nihongo Tanken Centre!

1

Have you ever wondered what the Japanese-looking building is, on the side of our playground? The NSW Department of Education runs a Japanese language and culture immersion centre located at our school. It is a unique offering, and we’d love to be part of your child’s language journey!

Since 1998, the Nihongo Tanken Centre has offered a fun, authentic environment for students K–12 to explore and deepen their Japanese language skills. Schools from across NSW visit the centre for a 4-hour immersion experience. Programs are syllabus-aligned and tailored to each school, with engaging activities such as language games, cultural tasks and craftwork.

Our unique setting includes:

  • a traditional tatami (straw mats) room, with shoji (translucent paper) screens and tokonoma (alcove for decorative items)
  • a Japanese garden
  • a tech-equipped classroom
  • a warm and welcoming team of native Japanese educators.

We also offer:

  • support to Japanese teachers across NSW
  • online HSC workshops for Year 12 students during school holidays.

Of course, students learning Japanese at Kirrawee are frequent visitors to the centre, and we always enjoy welcoming students from our very own site.

Let’s explore Japanese together!
