Mamma Mia! What a term!

1

Term 1 saw the long-awaited staging of our 2025 musical production ‘Mamma Mia’ in Week 10 and quickly became one of our most successful musicals to date, selling out all shows. From the perspective of this tired and relieved director, it was also a personal feat, staging this show in my third trimester of pregnancy!

‘Mamma Mia’ is a show that many have wanted to see staged at Kirrawee High for a long time, and to the dismay of numerous ex-students pining to play Donna or Sophie, this was definitely the year to pick a show that would showcase the talents of many of our incredible students and take our community to the sunny Greek islands for a night of love, misunderstandings, and of course ABBA!

The show featured the astounding talents of leads Olivia Mustapic, Billie-Rose Brotherson, Tiana Bishara, Luci Brunker, Luka Ford, Xavier De Frenza, Koby Selig and Nicholas Abelas, many of whom we can see pursuing musical theatre as professional careers when they leave school. The giant ensemble cast of singers and dancers filled the stage with colour, fun and talent, delivering show-stopping numbers and those famous ABBA harmonies. Something we’re so proud of in the Kirrawee productions is how often we will utilise and train up students in all roles – in the band, lighting and sound, backstage crew, costume team, hair and make-up, and front of house. But I’d also like to take a moment to acknowledge the incredible, tireless work of our amazing KHS teachers who make this show happen. Two in particular need mentioning: Mrs Lacey, as always, put in countless hours into her role as Musical Director, rewriting parts for the band, recording all harmonies for singers, training the VET team in charge of major lighting and sound roles, and the result was a very slick and professional sounding and looking production. And Ms Cherrie, famous for her organisational skills, took on her new Producer role with ease and diligence, and made a stressful job look very manageable. As always, it was a joy to choreograph with her and direct this incredible group of young people. We’ll both have many embarrassing dancing vids for the retirement montage at the end of our careers!

We want to thank our beautiful school community for supporting the production again this year. It’s such a joy to see and hear (Mrs Mustapic, I’m looking at you) our gorgeous and supportive families and teachers in the audience every night. It’s a huge commitment of love and sacrifice, but the finished product and seeing those smiling faces on stage makes it all worth it. And the tears! Boy were there a lot of tears after Olivia Mustapic’s show-stopper ‘The Winner Takes It All’ on the closing night, both in the audience and backstage!

So thank you to all who came for taking a chance on us!
