The Opens Boys Soccer team qualified as one of the two teams representing the Sydney East region in the CHS Knockout competition. As a result the team travelled to play the winners of the North Coast region, Byron Bay High School in Byron Bay, in the round of 16 match.
The game was played on a bumpy turf pitch, on a wind swept day in front of a large parochial crowd. Despite these conditions the boys played an amazing game. Captain, Evan Clemments opened the scoring in first five minutes with a low driving shot outside the box which powered past the right glove of the hapless Byron Bay keeper. Midway through the first half light stepping Hugo Twiss won a penalty for the team which was unfortunately unconverted. This brought the home crowd to life.
They erupted with joy just moments later when a long range free kick caught the wind and sailed into the top of our net. It didn’t take long for Kirrawee to hit back though with a neatly constructed goal which was started and finished with the ever reliable Finn Hanna. It stayed at two goals to one for the remainder of the first half until the best part of the second half until the third goal was slotted away by super sub, Cooper Spithill.
Three goals to one was the final score of the game. The boys were excited by their victory and now go through to the quarter finals to be played in Week 2 of Term 3.
Coaches Mr Sharp and Mr Hunt are very proud of the boys’ achievements and are looking forward to the next round.
