NAIDOC Week

1

The NSW Department of Education’s celebration of NAIDOC week included a special Corporate event which saw former athlete and politician Nova Peris deliver a key note address. Ms Peris, the first Aboriginal person to win a gold medal at an Olympic Games and the first Aboriginal woman elected to federal Parliament, spoke about her family history and the important role that education has played in helping her to achieve her dreams.

Kirrawee High School was proudly represented by Year 12 student Liam Grant who was selected as the Master of Ceremonies for this important event. Drawing from his heritage as a proud Wiradjuri man, Liam demonstrated exceptional skills in public speaking and event coordination. His confident and articulate presence set the tone for the entire event, guiding attendees through various performances, speeches, and activities with grace and poise. Liam's passionate delivery resonated with everyone present, creating an atmosphere of respect and appreciation for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures.

Following the main event, Liam participated in a Q&A session where he shared personal insights and thoughts about NAIDOC Week 2024. This session provided a platform for Liam to express the importance of celebrating Indigenous culture, reflecting on the theme of the year, and highlighting issues that are relevant to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities today. His thoughtful responses sparked meaningful discussions and encouraged attendees to deepen their understanding of Indigenous perspectives.

Liam’s central role in the Department’s NAIDOC Week celebrations has brought a great sense of pride to the Kirrawee High School community. Through his leadership and eloquence, Liam not only celebrated his own heritage but also empowered others to embrace diversity and foster cultural awareness . His role as master of ceremonies exemplified the school's commitment to reconciliation and respect for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories and cultures. Thank you, Liam, for representing yourself and our school so well!
