First Nations Student Advisory Group - Arts Unit

1

We would like to celebrate and recognize the achievement of Erika Beaupark (Year 9) in being recognized and selected to participate in the Arts Unit: First Nations Student Advisory Group.

The Arts Unit is a Department of Education role that provides  opportunities for students and teachers to express themselves, get involved in new activities and showcase their work in lots of programs like dance, music, drama, visual arts, public speaking, debating and more.

The goal of the advisory meeting was to talk to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander about ways to improve events organised by the Arts Unit. It was a consultative group made up of 70 students from all over NSW who identified as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander.

What was achieved?

"We achieved the goal of getting ideas across and getting to know more people who also are passionate about making events for Indigenous students better and more inclusive."

What you liked the most/ what do you think was the most important contribution?

"I loved how while answering the questions it was a judgement free space and we got to talk about our experiences with previous events organised by the Arts Units such as Schools Spectacular and Aboriginal Dance Workshops. The most important contribution was how the Arts Unit would get more people who were passionate about voicing their opinion and how they would get those opinions."

What was your favourite part of the workshop?

"My favourite past was the conversations we all had and the passion about improving events that everyone contributed to. Our ideas were about holding more events, organising events that engage a new audience of children and sending out information to Indigenous students to inform them about the First Nations Advisory group."
