Debating Program

1

This year debating has hit the ground running, with a record 50 students participating in 11 teams.

Our Year 7 cohort is raring to go and has shown great potential so far through out annual debating incursion.  Many of our more experienced debaters have once again returned to test their skills as deep thinkers and wordsmiths.  We’ve been very impressed by the knowledge and motivation shown by all our debaters so far.

Rafi Tudiman (Yr 7) aptly described the recent debating incursion.

“The debating incursion took place last Thursday in the school library. The purpose of the event was to improve our debating skills. There were around 40 kids in the incursion made up of several teams of four people who were given a topic to debate for or against. For example, why every household should have only one car. Each team took a turn to argue their case, either affirmative or negative, and the two judges gave feedback afterwards on how to improve for next time.

The debating incursion was interesting, I learned a lot and enjoyed it. We learned how to think on our feet, rebut, and how to structure an argument using techniques such as mindmaps.”

Many see debating as an art and we are so happy that our students are talking the opportunity in 2023 to enrich their own learning through this worthwhile program.
