B Street Smart Excursion

bs1

Year 10 and 11 students attended the B Street Smart road safety excursion in week 3 to coincide with their “Who’s got your Back” and “Life Ready” PDHPE units.

Students were confronted with a replica crash scene where they were able to watch the process that takes place when emergency services arrive. The students were guided through the process by a narrator from Care Flight where he explained every step that occurs and why the emergency services were responding in the manner they were.

Students were provided with information that took place weeks and months after the crash such as the rehabilitation process and the legal proceedings in court.

Students often pair road crashes with death; however, they were informed by 2 volunteer speakers who were survivors of crashes, about the long-term effects of their crash and the fact that they now live with severe disability or brain injury. One mother also spoke about the trauma she and her family faced because of her son causing the crash and killing not only himself but 4 other people and orphaning a toddler.

The excursion was confronting at times but also very moving and informative. Students were able to investigate and experience many pop-up expos set up in the arena.

Four of our year 11 students (Mitchell, Harrison, Matthew and Brayden) were selected to participate in a skit in the arena about driver distraction. The video of their acting was also uploaded to the B Street Smart website.

The boys were great ambassadors for Kirrawee High and demonstrated great impromptu skills.

Overall, a successful 2 days and the PDHPE, Year Advisors and KHS staff were truly proud of the behaviour and maturity demonstrated by both year groups on both days.
