Textiles really ‘CanCanCan!!!’ Moulin Rouge Excursion

1

On Wednesday Year 10 and 11 Textiles went on an all day excursion into the city. Students started by visiting SHAPE at the Powerhouse Museum. The students were able to view exemplary 2021 HSC Textile major works and folio’s, to gain inspiration for their own upcoming majors.

In the HSC Textiles and Design course, students develop confidence in the selection, design, manufacture and application of textile items. The focus is on meeting a design specification for a textile product through creative problem-solving and documenting the design and management of their project. Students develop a design in one of five focus areas: apparel, furnishings, costume, textile arts, or non-apparel.

We then visited Sydney Tafe for a campus tour of their Fashion Design Studio’s to learn about post school fashion courses such as costume and fashion design. A tour guide escorted us around FDS, showing us the CAD room, Production rooms and Design rooms, where they use computer aided design and manufacture, industrial sewing machines and irons to prepare those taking the course for when they go into the fashion industry.

Finally, we attended a matinee performance of Moulin Rouge, the musical at The Capitol theatre. The purpose of watching the musical was to enhance our learning about the focus area ‘Costume’. We have been studying costume designer Catherine Zuber, who has won multiple awards for her designs for the show. The musical was a spectacular production with amazing sets and costumes, along with a fantastic musical soundtrack. Some comments from students after watching the production…’best excursion ever’, ‘wow!’, ‘I loved it’, ‘that was the best thing I’ve ever seen’. It was a truly spectacular experience!
