2022 NSW Premier’s Reading Challenge

reading

Each year KHS students register for the NSW Premier’s Reading Challenge. The Challenge consists of participants reading twenty books, fifteen off the PRC list and five personal choice over a period of six months. However, we do allow students to add books read since the end of the last challenge, end of August 2021.

A rule change that is continuing for this year is that students can now add 3 books from any 1 approved series as part of their 15-book allocation.

Year 10 student participation
In 2021, a number of adjustments were made to support student engagement in the challenge because of Covid-19. These adjustments included provision for year 10 students to participate in the challenge in 2022 to allow them to become eligible for a PRC medal if they would have otherwise received this in 2021 but did not complete the challenge.
As a result, all year 10 students are able to participate in the PRC in 2022. The following factors should be noted about their participation and award eligibility:

  • All participating year 10 students will be placed onto the 7-9 challenge, with the same participation rules and requirements as other 7-9 challenge participants
  • All year 10 students who complete the challenge will receive a certificate that reflects their cumulative participation (ie gold certificate for 4th year, platinum certificate for 7th year, standard completion certificate for all other years)
  • Year 10 students who received a PRC medal in 2021 in recognition of their completion of the challenge from years 3 to 9 inclusive will receive a PRC certificate in 2022 and will not receive a second medal.
  • Year 10 students who did not complete the challenge in 2021 but would have been eligible for a PRC medal if they had, will receive their medal in 2022 upon successful completion of the challenge.

PRC Student Site
The PRC student site is available again this year! Students can search for books to read, add books to their reading logs, and track their progress throughout the challenge. The website is currently being updated and will be available for students when the challenge opens on February 28. You can find the site at https://online.det.nsw.edu.au/prc/studentExperience.html#/ and there is a useful help video available to demonstrate how the site works.

The NSW Premier’s Reading Challenge aims to encourage a love of reading for leisure in students, and to enable them to experience quality literature.  It also is aimed at improving the students’ reading and comprehension skills while broadening their knowledge of the wider world.

Please encourage your children to complete the Challenge so they can enjoy the reading experience.
