Year 10 Textiles Technology

1

This term, our Year 10 Textiles Technology students have been hard at work developing their creative and technical skills through two exciting projects: Costume Design and Portfolio Development. These projects not only allowed students to explore the world of fashion and costume, but also helped them refine their design process, from initial concept to final creation.

Costume Design: Creativity Meets Practicality

In the Costume Design project, students were challenged to create a costume for a specific theme, ranging from historical periods to fantasy genres, with a focus on both design innovation and functionality. The students began by researching their chosen themes, experimenting with fabric samples, and sketching detailed designs. They also learned how to select appropriate materials, ensuring their costumes were not only visually striking but durable and comfortable for wear.

Throughout the project, students were encouraged to experiment with different techniques such as fabric manipulation, appliqué, and embroidery to bring their designs to life. Some chose to explore avant-garde designs, while others recreated iconic looks from famous films and theatre productions. This year we had inspiration stemming from TV series Bridgerton and Queen Charlotte, Iconic movie stars like Marilyn Monroe, Disney Princesses, 1990’s Mean Girls and Clueless, The Barbie Movie, along with many others.

Portfolio Development: Documenting the Design Journey

Alongside their practical costume work, the students have been diligently compiling their portfolios, which are a crucial part of their coursework. These portfolios serve as a record of their design process and creative development. Students were encouraged to reflect on each stage of their project, documenting their research, design evolution, fabric choices, and any challenges they overcame.

A well-organized and thoughtful portfolio is essential for any aspiring designer, and our students have demonstrated a keen eye for detail in their documentation. They’ve included mood boards, fabric swatches, and annotated sketches to demonstrate their thought process and design rationale. In addition, many students have incorporated photos of their completed garments, along with reflective statements about what they learned throughout the project.

Looking Ahead

The Year 10 Textiles Technology students are excited to continue developing their skills and expand their creative horizons, with many opting to continue the journey through senior study to HSC. The costume and portfolio projects have given them a solid foundation in both practical and theoretical aspects of design, and we can’t wait to see where their textile journeys will take them next. We are very proud of their efforts as designers, problems solvers, project managers and artists! Here are just a few of their amazing efforts
