On Friday 22nd August, Kirrawee High School proudly hosted the 33rd Annual Morrison Concert, a much-loved tradition that has been part of the Kirrawee cultural landscape for more than three decades. This iconic event brought together our outstanding student musicians, special guests, alumni, and the legendary James Morrison for an unforgettable evening of jazz and celebration.
The night began with a spectacular first set from the Kirrawee High School Jazz Orchestra (KHSJO), showcasing the incredible talent and versatility of our students.
The night opened with a Manhattan Transfer Medley. Scarlet Pettigrew lead the acapella opening with Koby Selig and Tiana Bishara before Olivia Mustapic took over the lead in “Operator”. This was followed by a beautiful rendition of “A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square” sung by Scarlet. As the song slowed, the bass drum thumped out the pulse as the band launched into a rousing version of Birdland. What an opening number!
The next sequence featured our graduation class of 2025. James took the stage and was delighted to be able to perform with our students.
- “He Ain’t Heavy He’s My Brother” – featuring Kate Hummerston
- “Smack Dab in the Middle” – arranged by Kerri Lacey – featuring Sienna Bussing
- “They Can’t Take That Away From Me” – featuring Scarlet Pettigrew
- “Hallelujah I Love Her So” – arranged by Kerri Lacey – featuring Olivia Mustapic and Ivy Nguyen
- “Children of Sanchez” – arranged by Adam Robinson – featuring Mika Faass and special guest Caelyn Humphreys
Following these incredible performances, the official handover took place, marking the presentation of the 2026 KHS Jazz Orchestra. Our new recruits had the chance to walk the stage:
- Piano - Elizabeth Lu
- Bass - Sean Parnell
- Trumpet 2 - Eitan Faass
- Trumpet 3 - William Walshe
- Trombone 3 - Eirian Humphreys
- Alto Sax 2 - Joshua Pearce
- Tenor Sax 1 - Elise Mead
- Tenor Sax 2 - Keziah Campbell
- Baritone Sax - Jarrod Cummings
The new ensemble joined forces with the graduating class for a spirited performance of “Heard It Through the Grapevine”, followed by a joyous finale of “Sir Duke”, symbolizing the passing of the torch and the bright future of jazz at Kirrawee High.
The evening then shifted to the headline act: the incomparable James Morrison, who once again amazed the audience with his extraordinary skill on trumpet, trombone, and tenor saxophone. The set also featured alumni Evan Mannell, an exceptional drummer whose unique and captivating style reminded us of the incredible talent nurtured at Kirrawee. Other standout solos came from William Morrison on guitar, Harry Morrison on bass, and, of course, James himself, leaving the audience in awe.
We extend heartfelt thanks to our Music staff, the students of the Jazz Orchestra and thair families, the Music Support Group, and our generous sponsors Miranda Musical Society and Engadine Musical Society, whose support ensures this event continues to thrive.
