Stage 6 Textiles students were treated to a visit from one of our own past students, Madeleine Pawlak, for a talk and showcase of some of her body of works, used for her successful application to NIDA for the Bachelor of Fine Arts (Costume) course. Maddie graciously gave up her precious time to speak about her experiences at KHS in Textiles and Design, and her pathway into this dream course, which she will be commencing in 2025. Students were awestruck with some of Maddie's designs, including 2 x historically correct 1800's crinolines, gorgeous and intricate beaded lace 1920's gown, and beautifully constructed full skirts featuring pleats, godets, French seams, full gathers and more.
Maddie discussed the long road in her quest to get into arguably Australia's best 'Costume' course and showcased her first attempt (2023) portfolio and item (a 'times keeper' inspired coat), which landed her an interview. We then saw photos of her second attempt (2024) portfolio and item (Victor Hugo), which landed her an interview and then a spot in the 2025 BFA course! We are so proud of Maddie's tenacity, talent and commitment to reaching for her dreams. Only 6 people are chosen for this course Australia wide, so it is a major achievement. It was so lovely to hear about Maddie's passion for Textiles which developed out of her school projects and her involvement on the Costume team behind the scenes at KHS for 'Shrek' and 'On with the Show'.
Here are some pictures from the incursion...
