Earlier this term, two Year 12 VET Hospitality students embraced the opportunity to compete in WorldSkills Australia National Championships for a week in Melbourne.
In November 2022 Monique Westwood and Olivia Stock tried their skills at the Regional Competition where they demonstrated their abilities in Food and Beverage in areas such as Customer Service, order taking, table service and espresso coffee preparation. Both students demonstrated a high level of skill, winning Gold and Silver medals in this competition.
Their success in the regional competition saw them invited to compete at the National Championships held in Melbourne, where thousands of spectators watch Australia’s best trades and skills talent compete across a range of trades, traineeships and skill-based subjects. Although neither received a medal at Nationals, Monique was recognised for her high level of skill achieving a Certificate of Excellence and placing 4th in her category. Olivia also achieved a high score and placed 5th. The quality of their performance in the competition contributed to the NSW team winning the VET in Schools Perpetual Shield for the best performing state in the National Competition.
WorldSkills International (WSI) promotes the benefits of and need for skilled professionals through grassroots community projects and skill competitions for a variety of trades and skills. The competition cycle is held every two years which will see VET students of Year 11 2024 being offered the opportunity to compete with the National Championships being held in Brisbane in 2025.
Kirrawee would love to see our future VET students competing at these levels. Will this be you?
