The SRC and White Ribbon teams joined forces this term to raise awareness and provide support for women and families escaping situations of domestic violence in the Sutherland Shire.
For the last few weeks of Term 3, and continuing for the first few weeks of Term 4, KHS is running a donation drive for Acacia Family and Domestic Violence Support Inc. We called on our community to donate gifts for women and children which will be given to Acacia and provided to women in need. For every item donated, students receive a raffle ticket and are in the running to win some wonderful prizes donated by local businesses.
Acacia’s History
The charity was founded by a special lady who herself was a victim of domestic violence. Despite her own difficult journey she has a big heart and wanted to ease the pain of other families who were also experiencing domestic violence. One Christmas, 5 years ago, she reached out to her friends and family to collect gifts for a number of women and their children who were homeless and penniless over the holiday period, and from this The Helping Sisters was born. After 3 consecutive Christmas’s providing gifts for an increasing number of women and their children a few core members of The Helping Sisters worked to form our charity, Acacia.
Acacia has formed a relationship with The Family Co who provide support both financially and emotionally to families escaping domestic violence, through them we know that our gifts are reaching those most vulnerable in our community.
How you can help
- Gold coin donation – this will assist Acacia to support families escaping domestic violence including providing emergency gift vouchers for families when they have to leave their home.
- Donating Gift Vouchers – these will be gifted to teens at Christmas or to families as emergency relief.
- Donating brand new handbags – Acacia will fill these with gifts for women escaping domestic violence.
- Donating brand new (with tags) scarves, pashminas or towels – Acacia will use these as the main item in gift bags they put together using donated cosmetics for women escaping domestic violence.
Donations can be made at the stall outside the library before school and at Recess everyday for the rest of Term and the first few weeks of Term 4.
The school holidays provide an excellent opportunity to source some of these gifts and we encourage everyone to get behind this important initiative – you could have the power to positively impact a life for the better!
The SRC and White Ribbon would like thank all those who have already donated for your support!
