The 31st Anniversary of the Morrison Concert marked an unforgettable evening of music, mentorship, and camaraderie. The date, Friday 15th September 2023 The Venue - The Stephen R Smith Hall on the grounds of Kirrawee High School. This annual event pays homage to the legendary musician, James Morrison, and serves as a platform for students to showcase their talents alongside a living jazz icon.

Workshop with James Morrison:

The evening commenced with a workshop led by James Morrison, a master of jazz. The focus of this workshop was to impart invaluable knowledge and techniques to the Year 12 students from the Jazz Orchestra. James engaged the students in a captivating conversation about soloing techniques and offered sage advice, drawing from his decades of experience in the world of jazz.

Following the workshop, James further demonstrated his commitment to nurturing young talent by orchestrating a rehearsal session with the Kirrawee High School Jazz Orchestra. During this session, he meticulously organized solos and fine-tuned the orchestra's performance, ensuring an unforgettable night of music.

First Half Highlights:

The first half of the concert featured an array of talented musicians. The Jazz Orchestra introduced Aaron Briggs as their second trombonist, marking a significant milestone as the first trombone player to join since the pandemic. Notably, 2022 alumni, Thomas Tyrrell and PJ Lennon, lent their expertise to enhance the evening's program and support Aaron.

The stage was graced by outstanding performances from Max Fernandez, who delivered a rendition of "Happy Together," and Stephanie Swords, who mesmerized the audience with "All Falls Down" from her HSC program. Both Max and Stephanie had previously represented Kirrawee at Pulse Alive and Southern Stars in August, highlighting the school's commitment to nurturing musical talent.

James Morrison returned to the stage, sharing it with some of the Year 12 students for a captivating performance. Lucy Gilliland presented a soulful rendition of "California Dreaming," accompanied by Mallee Skelton on Keys, Ryan Mead on Lap Steel Guitar, Harrison Tsui on Muted Trumpet, Mathias Etienne on Tenor Saxophone, and James himself.

The energy soared with Izak Allen's (Year 12) rousing performance of "Crazy Little Thing Called Love." James played a pivotal role in the official handover ceremony, bidding farewell to the Year 12 students and welcoming new recruits, including Joshua Pearce (Year 7), Eitan Faass (Year 7), Kaya Kimla (Year 8), Lola Faass (Year 9), Mika Faass (Year 10), Sienna Bussing (Year 10), and Olivia Mustapic (Year 10).

The highlight of the night was the humorous transition from Josiah Brennan (Year 12) handing over to Eitan Faass (Year 7), with a noticeable height difference that added a touch of comedy to the proceedings.

The 2024 Jazz Orchestra was officially launched with Scarlett Pettigrew and Olivia Mustapic sharing the stage with James for an electrifying rendition of "Too Darn Hot." Max joined the girls for a stunning performance of "Ease on Down the Road." Finally, Year 12 students reunited with James to deliver the closing number, "It Don't Mean A Thing," leaving the audience in awe.

Second Half:

The second half of the concert featured James Morrison and his trio, including Harry Morrison on Double Bass (borrowed from the school), William Morrison on Guitar and Vocals, and Patrick Danao on Drums. The Year 9 students were particularly captivated by this set, gaining a newfound appreciation for the possibilities of jazz music, especially Patrick's skillful drumming.

The success of the 31st Anniversary of the Morrison Concert was made possible by the dedication and support of numerous individuals and groups. Special thanks go to Peter Reeve, Alumni 2020 Harry Gray, and Tim Roffe for their expertise on the production elements, the Music Support Group of parents, the P and C, and the Senior Executive and staff of Kirrawee High School.
