It is with great excitement that we share Will Pearce's review of the Year 9 showcase event.

The Year 9 Music Showcase, on 14 November, was an extraordinary exhibition of musical talent. The show was hosted by Lola Faass and Gabriella Goncalves who introduced each act and organised fun games and activities, contributing to the excitement of the evening.

Commencing the showcase was the mini jazz orchestra, featuring Joshua Entwistle on bass guitar, James Nickel on drums, Patrick Robinson on guitar, Aaron Briggs and Lola Faass on trombone, William Pearce on trumpet, Tiana Bishara on vocals, and on tenor saxophone, special guest, Joshua Pearce, a Year 7 student who is a part of Kirrawee High School’s Jazz Orchestra. The group performed “Supremes Medley”, “Ease on Down the Road”, and “Mr Pinstripe Suit” and was an excellent opening act, setting a captivating tone for the rest of the show.

Nicholas Abelas then performed a heartfelt cover of “Jealous” by Labyrinth followed by Chase Lawson, who demonstrated his skill on bass guitar with his rendition of “Save Us” by Accept.

Elizabeth Lu then performed Erik Satie’s “Gymnopedie No. 1” and “We Wish You a Merry Christmas” on piano, creating a festive atmosphere and lifting the Christmas spirit. Tahnia Harris on acoustic guitar, Eve Lawson on vocals, and Grace Powell-Vandermaal on piano then performed Dolly Parton’s “Jolene”, leaving the audience in awe of their talent and harmony.

Nicholas Abelas and Tiana Bishara then sang “Seasons of Love” from the musical ‘Rent’, elevating the emotional tone of the room. Lawson Teale, Kai Hewet, James Nickel, and Jack Bottle then performed “Aneurysm”, “Israel’s Son”, and “Don’t Talk to Me”, blowing the audience away.

Eve Lawson then sang a soulful performance of “Let it Go” by James Bay, further contributing to the emotional tone of the night. The subsequent performance featured the band ‘Halfway to Thirty’, including Joshua Entwistle on bass guitar, Lola Faass and Partick Robinson on guitar, Tiana Bishara on vocals and piano, and William Pearce on drums. The band performed “Live and Let Die” by Paul McCartney and “Hit Me With Your Best Shot” by Pat Benatar.

The final act was a karaoke performance of “What Makes You Beautiful” by One Direction featuring Jarrod Cummings, Joshua Entwistle, Chase Lawson, Ethan Ball, William Pearce, and Hayden Fuller and was a fun and lighthearted way to end the evening.

Overall, the Year 9 Music Showcase was more than just some performance, it was a celebration of talent, teamwork, and the joy of playing music together. The applause and smiling faces in the audience attest to the success and enjoyment of the evening. The showcase not only demonstrated the incredible talents of the Year 9 music class but also created lasting memories of an unforgettable night.

Everyone in the class would like to thank the commendable efforts of the VET Entertainment Team who set up the stage, performed sound checks, and organised equipment throughout the show, ensuring a smooth and engaging performance. We also extend our gratitude to the contributions and work of our dedicated staff including Ms. Fawer, Ms. Lacey, and all of the other CAPA teachers.
