Aboriginal Education
Kirrawee High School acknowledges that for authentic engagement and meaningful connection with First nations perspectives is to be achieved, a deep connection to cultural context, school and local communities and curriculum must be formed. KHS ensures that these opportunities for learning and connection are made available to all students both in the context of teaching and learning and social, academic and cultural experiences.
Our school respects, values and promotes Aboriginal culture by planning for culturally inclusive learning environments and activities for First Nations Students. These include:
- Yarning Circles which take place twice a term
- Mentoring for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders through community programs such as the NRL School to Work Program, Kurranulla Cultural Mentoring, Deadly Choices
- Participation in external workshops, excursions, camps and cultural activities to support leadership development
- Careers programs which support student interest and career opportunities
- Development of initiatives, activities and celebrations of First Nations culture including Sorry Day, Reconciliation Week, NAIDOC Week and Close the Gap Day
Our First Nations students are supported to reach their personal goals through a comprehensive mentoring program with our First Nations Student Contact and Head Teacher Student Engagement including the creation of PLPs which support cultural and academic goal identification and attainment.
