Learning Support at Kirrawee High School
Support that fits your child's needs
Some students need extra support to feel confident and do their best at school. We work closely with families to make support plans and adjustments that suits each child’s needs. At Kirrawee High School, the Learning Support Team works in partnership with students, parents, and teachers to ensure that every young person can engage in learning and reach their potential. Open communication between families and the school is essential. We encourage parents and carers to share information about their child’s learning, wellbeing, or medical needs so that we can provide the most appropriate support at school.
The Learning Support Team works closely with the Wellbeing Team to provide a holistic approach to supporting students’ academic, social, and emotional needs.
Learning support can include:
-
teachers and support staff working together with families (and students, if needed)
-
specialist support for students learning English as an additional language or dialect (EAL/D)
-
providing tailored programs to help high potential and gifted students with their advanced learning needs
-
small group tutoring to provide targeted literacy and numeracy support for students
-
regular check-ins to review and update the planned supports
-
changes to the classrooms:
- accessible classrooms
- assistive technology
- instructional resources
-
extra guidance, simpler content or different focus during lessons
-
assessment adjustments:
- more time
- simpler language
- breaks during tasks
- different ways to complete a task (e.g. oral presentations instead of written tasks).
Provisions for assessment and learning are implemented in line with NSW Department of Education guidelines. Adjustments are always based on individual student needs, ensuring that support is fair, consistent, and equitable while maintaining the integrity of learning outcomes.
We know when a student needs help when:
- teachers notice changes in learning or behaviour
- reviewing assessment results and learning progress
- parents and carers raise concerns or ask for support.
Adjustments are planned with parents and carers. They are reviewed regularly and changed when needed. If you think your child may need extra help, contact us.

- monitor progress
- connect with other services if needed.
KHS Learning Support Staff
The Learning and Support Teacher (LaST) works collaboratively with classroom teachers to develop strategies, implement adjustments, and coordinate provisions for students who require additional support. LaSTs also liaise closely with families, the wellbeing team, and external providers to ensure a consistent and targeted approach.
Our School Learning Support Officers (SLSOs) work alongside teachers in the classroom to provide direct support to students. This may include helping with learning tasks, providing individual assistance, or supporting behaviour and engagement so that all students can participate fully in class.
Our learning and support team may also refer to or request support from:
- school counsellors
- school psychologists
- student support officers and year advisors
- itinerant teachers for vision or hearing
- Aboriginal education officers
- community and home school liaison officers.
Contact us to meet with a member of this team to talk about your child’s strengths, interests and areas where they may need support.
